South Africa and Russia discussed various options to preserve the value of platinum in the global market, South African Minister of Mineral Resources Gwede Mantashe said in Johannesburg. We looked at various options that can be used for platinum, and different technologies that are developed for platinum consumption. These are interventions related to platinum demand, "Mantashe said.
The minister told the media on Tuesday after meeting with Russian Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Dmitry Kobylkin. The meeting was part of the third Platinum Group Metals Conference (PGM) in South Africa and Russia, held at the Mintek in Johannesburg.
South Africa represents nearly 90% of the world's platinum reserves.
The conference agreed on the need to increase the demand for platinum group metals (PGM) and to develop other uses of GMPs, including fuel cell technology , jewelry making, as well as investment applications.
The two countries also shared innovations in ore processing, especially South African technology in water technologies and efficiency
Mantashe stated that Mintek was conducting research on a number of alternative uses for platinum.
