The idea was born at the end of 2017 before it was formalized by FIFA on April 30, 2018. Today, when a meeting of the FIFA Council is to be held this Friday in Miami to validate the project, the face of the new World Club is about to be definitively modeled. As a reminder, this competition, organized every year in December, is exclusively reserved for the winners of the UEFA Champions League, Copa Libertadores (South America), the African LDC, the Asian LDC, the CONCACAF LOC (North and Central America), the Oceania LOC, and the host country champion club.
From 2021, when the new format will come into effect, it's a huge change. Mundo Deportivo reveals the contours of this new competition, which should be held every four years and will replace the famous Confederations Cup. A tournament usually held one year before the World Cup at the host country of the most prestigious football competition. The Catalan newspaper is even very precise in its revelations since it adds that the first edition of this new-look World Club will be held from June 17 to July 4, 2021 and will bring together 24 teams (instead of 7!). Finish the tournament organized in December.
Barça pushes FIFA
A great upheaval wanted by FIFA and led by FC Barcelona. The club culé has indeed been the privileged interlocutor with FIFA precise MD. Faced with this revolution, UEFA has necessarily bad because this new World Club represents a competition ahead for its prestigious Champions League. In an attempt to calm the game with the governing body of European football, FIFA would have reduced the share of European formations. Thus, it will not be 12, but only 8 teams to be involved (and six teams from South America, three from North and Central America, three from Asia, three from Africa and one from Oceania).
Of the eight seats reserved for continental clubs, two have already been awarded to FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. Not surprising. On the other hand, no details on the modalities of attribution for the six remaining tickets (especially if the winner of the Champions League is neither blaugrana nor merengue) has been added. With regard to the organization of pools, eight groups of three teams will be drawn. The eight teams finishing first in their pool will advance to the quarter-finals. Finally, in terms of financial gains, MD concludes by saying that FIFA plans to raise around 2.5 billion euros. It would then pay between 65% and 75% of the amount to the clubs.
