This young man with curly hair and fair eyes has always been described as Vincent van Gogh at the age of 13. A thorough and unpublished study of this photograph conducted at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam has just proved that it is actually his younger brother, Theo, then aged 15.
"Of course, there was a slight pinch in the heart because we have so few photos of Vincent Van Gogh and now we have one even less, so it was not very good news, but on another I am always happy when we are able to discover the truth … we could really identify it and be sure of what we had"said the director of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, Axel Rueger.
Vincent Van Gogh was particularly reluctant to be photographed. This photo which appears in many biographies. was one of only two known portraits of the painter. There remains only one.
