The president of the Consumers Association of Senegal (Ascosen), Momar Ndao, reiterated his total support for the poultry industry in Senegal. Visiting the Sedima, a flagship of the Senegalese poultry industry, he hoped that the protective measures taken by the State are maintained. "This is an opportunity to ask that the protective measures that have been initiated can be firmly maintained for the protection of the poultry industry," Ndao said. He indicates that this state policy has allowed the sector, still fragile, to record performances in recent years and to generate thousands of jobs.
Momar Ndao recalled that Ascosen leads, since 2006, this fight for the protection of the poultry industry. Today, he is satisfied to see that this sub-sector is doing well, carried, among others, by a platform like the Sedima. "We now have a poultry industry that employs thousands of Senegalese. In addition, a study by the Ministry of Livestock says that there is 42% of residues in beef, 14% in sheepmeat and goat meat and 3% of antibiotic residues in poultry ", explained president of the Ascosen
Asked about the opening of the borders, Momar Ndao reaffirmed his opposition by putting forward several reasons. The first, according to him, is sanitary. According to him, there are problems of traceability of products contaminated by bird flu. There is also the fact that the European Union has authorized the fattening of poultry with pork protein: this poses an ethical problem for the Senegalese population of more than 90% Muslims. "If we have to protect the consumer, we have to protect him against all this," said Momar Ndao.
Returning to the Sedima, Ascosen's president says he saw a factory that works with "standards the processes it uses and the importance it attaches to the environment. "All of this shows that we can do good locally," Ndao said. The Sedima considered today, as a flagship of Senegalese industry, achieved a turnover of 42 billion FCfa, in 2017. The holding is composed of five entities.
