Trump threatens to revoke GM subsidies as a result of his proposed layoff and closure

US President Donald Trump threatened Tuesday to deprive GM General Motors (GM) of "all its subsidies," the day after its announcement of proposed layoffs and plant closures in North America and elsewhere.

"Very disappointed by the decision of General Motors and its chief executive, Mary Barra, to close factories in Ohio, Michigan and Maryland," Trump said. "The United States has saved General Motors and that's how they thank us! We are now considering removing all GM subsidies, including for electric cars."

According to the US media, the president was probably referring to the $ 7,500 tax relief granted by the federal government to consumers buying electric vehicles.

To cancel the grant, however, a new law will have to be passed in Congress.

GM announced Monday the removal of more than 14,000 jobs and the effective closure of five assembly and propulsion plants in the United States and Canada in 2019, a reorganization plan that would make the company "very agile, resilient and profitable ", according to Ms. Barra.
