PRODEMUD project coordinator Lhyxzas Tchimboungou said yesterday at the workshop on national technical guidelines on hazardous waste, that Tivaoune and Ziguinchor are the areas of intervention of the pilot project to contribute to the reduction of emissions of persistent organic pollutants through the best available techniques and best environmental practices

"The aim is to discuss newly developed guidelines for the collection, sorting, recycling and disposal of household hazardous waste and industrial, on which public actors can rely for the development of technical specifications, and the private sector for collection operations and hazardous waste, "said Lhyxzas Tchimboungou, coordinator of the project.

According to him, Since this is a pilot project, they will intervene at the level of Tivaoune and Ziguinchor all this goes through a regulatory framework and technical guidelines. And these two localities were chosen according to a certain number of criteria. "Studies have shown that the mixing of wastes in wild dumps in our municipalities is a source of this unintentional persistent organic pollutant. We find for example biomedical waste from household waste all that is plastic and what our people unfortunately do, may be unknowingly burned in the open air and the smoke that emerges causes persistent organic pollutants unintentional. These are very dangerous substances and have a negative impact on the environment, "he said.

Ms. Aïta Sarr Seck, national director of the project, noted that multiform environmental pollution related irrational municipal and hazardous waste management practices are well established. The same is true of the various benefits that society could derive in terms of improving the living environment and public health, if measures for the environmentally sound management of this waste are designed and properly applied. "The degradation of the living environment of people and the environment due to the lack of rational management of municipal and hazardous waste, especially those that can lead to the emission of unintentional persistent organic pollutants, is legion", he said.

For the director, this case of developing countries is more than worrying. In response, international opinion has developed a number of conventions, including the Stockholm Convention, which aims to protect human health and the environment from the dangers of organic pollutants (POPs) and their wastes. "Senegal, party to the convention since its ratification in 2003, has, in the light of the provisions of article 7, elaborated, submitted, and then updated its national implementation plan (PNM) in which, it is planned the implementation a number of pilot projects to contribute to the reduction of persistent organic pollutant emissions through best available techniques and best environmental practices. As such, he has benefited from the "Project for the Environmentally Sound Management of Municipal Solid Waste and Hazardous Wastes to Reduce Emissions of Unintentional Persistent Organic Pollutants," she said.
