Senior forward Kyle Young to miss Ohio-Michigan state with concussion

The state of Ohio will be without a starter on Saturday.

Senior forward Kyle Young has been sent off for the Big Ten semi-final against Michigan.

He inadvertently took an elbow in the head of forward Trevion Williams in the second half of the Buckeyes’ 87-78 win over Purdue, knocking him out of the game after a few possessions. Head track coach Brad Watson evaluated him in and behind the bench, ultimately bringing Young back to the locker room. After the game, Holtmann confirmed that his starting striker was assessed for a concussion.

It’s unclear how long he’ll be unavailable or if there’s any chance he’ll play in Sunday’s Big Ten Championship game if Ohio State advances one more round. According to Ohio State spokesperson Dan Wallenberg, Young “has entered Ohio State medical protocols and will be assessed daily.”

Either way, Ohio state will have to win without Young – who tied a career-high 18 points against Purdue – on Sunday. The Michigan frontline defense, led by 7-foot-1 center Hunter Dickinson, will largely be a two-man job for EJ Liddell and freshman Zed Key. These two will need to play important minutes for the Buckeyes to secure a thwarted victory and advance to the tournament championship.

Young has now suffered two concussions this season, previously missing the Buckeyes’ Feb. 25 game against Michigan State after being shot in the head in the dying seconds of Ohio State’s opener against Michigan.

Michigan will also be without a key player for Saturday’s game, as the Wolverines announced Saturday morning that Isaiah Livers – their second-leading scorer – is out indefinitely with a stress injury to her right foot.
