Sent off for allegedly spitting at Raiders player, Steelers’ Trai Turner says he was first spat by opponent

There was a lot of drama between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Las Vegas Raiders during and after Sunday’s game. It all started when Najee Harris of the Steelers scored a touchdown to put Pittsburgh two points behind the Raiders in fourth. On the scoring game, Steelers offensive lineman Trai Turner reportedly spat at Las Vegas Raiders defenseman Marquel Lee.

This led to Turner being kicked out of the game, which the Steelers ended up losing, 26-17. The tiff also resulted in two unsportsmanlike penalties, as, after the apparent spit, Raiders defensive tackle Solomon Thomas pushed Turner.

Turner says he didn’t start the fight, however, and claims he was spat on first. After the game, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin explained his side. Here’s what the Pittsburgh coach said, via the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

“Someone spat in his face. I understand the 15-yard penalties and so on, to take control of the game and stuff, but Trai isn’t a young man. He’s not too emotional. way he responded, what happened had to happen, and I was expressing this case to [the referees]. “

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger also told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that Turner told QB an opponent spat on him.

“I didn’t get the whole thing, very early on, but just talking to him he said he got spit on,” Big Ben said. “He didn’t like it, which I understand and respect as a man, and he went and tried to say something to the guy who spat on him.”

On the other side, the story is different.

Thomas explained what he saw saying, “From my perspective I saw one of their players trying to spit on one of my teammates. And he was charging them, so I kind of wanted the to separate.”

“I was called for unsportsmanlike when I thought I was parting with it,” he continued. “I just have to protect my teammates, and you never want to see another guy spit on your guys or charge them up and try to fight them.”

Regardless of what happened, the Raiders had the final say, because with their win they are now 2-0.
