The psychology of basketball and the borderline between ambition and selfishness

One of the most important aspects of coaching is the psychic preparation of the players. Motivation and concentration of all the team on the realization of its tasks.

Željko Obradović is perhaps the best "psychotherapist" among coaches. He wrote for the Euroleague website about the most important details of the team's psychological preparation and players for the match and a great competition.

Obradovic we pass on the story in its entirety …

When I work with players, I always think of a very important detail: we are all living beings. I try to show them respect. Someone gave me a chance to train all these players and at the end of the day, I'm just a man, just like them. They all know that they can talk to me if they have problems in life or if they have something to do with it. My players are my best friends that I have. Because we spend a lot of time together in one day, so it's impossible to be different.

Therefore, I try to always listen to my players and talk to them about everything, on and off the pitch. Players sometimes behave like wise men, but they also have a lot of questions, which I particularly like. Sometimes, players do not want to become a question in front of their teammates, so they come to my office, where we speak to four eyes. Every new idea is welcome in me. This is the best kind of cooperation.

As a coach, it's important for me to know my players, to know how to react with them in certain situations. When we are on the bench, we must understand each other. You have 12 players – 12 different characters and nobody reacts in the same way in the same situation. With some you have to be more specific, with others it is softer. In the end, everyone must know that my only goal is to improve the entire team, but also each individual.

Our work is very stressful. We often have to think quickly and draw conclusions in an instant. I know that sometimes I cross the border. But even when I do it, I have no problem apologizing to anyone. I tell the player: "I agree, I made a mistake. You know me and you know that I did not do it or that I do not say it with bad intention. "

I will never change that because the matches are full of emotions and that it is impossible to control every detail. I want to do my job the best I know, help the team, that's why I'm aggressive. People are probably amazed when they see it, but it's something between the player and me and we know why something like this happened.

Players know my character. I am a direct person and I know that I want them 100% at every stage of the training or match. There is no excuse when it does not go as far as possible. If you do not give 100 coupons, I'm usually pretty simple.

You have to give 100% yourself and mentally, not just physically. All players must be on the same wavelengths at the end of the day because it all depends on their reaction to the game. During the match, my concentration must be 100%. If I am not focused, I create a problem for the team. That's why I always prepare myself for all situations to find the best solution. Of course, it is impossible to be in this mode during the whole game, it's the same for the players, but we must all be focused.

An important part of my job is to protect the player from the pressure. I try to do some specific things, especially when important games are waiting for us. I relax the toys. They must be relaxed and remember that their job is to play basketball – what they do all their life and what they need.

Sometimes I have to remind them to be serious. For example, during the preparations for Zadar, after a few preliminary minutes of the match, I turned to the bench and said, "What am I doing now? Am I replacing the five players because they deserve it? "The players were totally unconcentrated. When this happens, the coach must respond.

Even when everyone is focused, basketball shows why gambling is where mistakes happen. In every practice and game, we see a lot of mistakes. Even in games that people see as perfect, you can still find a lot of mistakes. It is not always easy for players to accept errors. If you talk to them about mistakes during a break or during training, they may believe you, but they will probably still have suspicions. You can really feel it when they think: "Okay, but …", and the best way for you to "cancel that" is a video clip. To be sure of themselves.

When an error occurs, I want to know why this error occurred so I can tell my players and try to fix them. Players must understand that they should not commit the same mistake twice. This must not happen. That's why I've talked to gangs on the bench several times during games, not with those on the ground. I want to prepare them so that they do not make the same mistakes.

Above all, a single line of players should never cross each other – they must not be selfish. A player who wants to do good to himself must first work for the team. When I see a selfish player, I react immediately. I am playing or stopping to train. Every player must know when he plays in my team – selfishness is never allowed.

I want to be clear – at the beginning of each season, I talk to the players and I tell them, "Guys, we have certain rules. We have to be a team, do some things together, be on the same wavelength. Always! Always. If someone has a problem with that – the doors are open, you can go there freely. & # 39; It's the way from the first to the last day of the season, and that's the most important thing.

Of course, it is also necessary that toy ambitions come with a team. It is important. Everyone wants to be better players, score a lot of points and work in the field. It's normal when someone is ambitious and thirsts for success. But there must be a limit between ambitions and selfishness. The question is: why do you play basketball? And the answer must always be: Tim! Always a team.
