In Serbia, half of the adult population suffers from hypertension. As a "silent killer", this scary disease causes serious damage to the body and can cause up to 84% of strokes and 2/3 of heart attacks. Any interruption of treatment can be fatal for the patient.
A sensationalist interpretation of the findings of a Danish study has caused unjustified suspicion and anxiety in patients who use antihypertensive drugs. The problem arose after information about doctors published by the Agency for Drugs and Medical Devices on its website indicated that the Danish study indicated that the drugs containing hydrochlorothiazide used in the Treatment of high blood pressure and heart failure may in some cases increase the risk of developing skin cancer without melanoma. Although the increase in risk is measured by promise and only at high cumulative doses, and no such case has been reported in Serbia, in some media it has been found that drugs containing hydrochlorothiazide as carcinogens.
– I must point out that some of the information advertised in the media these days is false. These are medicines that patients in Serbia drink for decades, effective medicines, recommended drugs worldwide and vital. Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic whose indications for use are very clear and which are necessary to treat millions of patients with cardiovascular disease. Any interruption of the prescribed treatment without consulting a doctor in such patients can be fatal – a reputed cardiologist is explicit, teacher. Dr. Nebojša Tasić, Head of the Department of Cardiovascular Research at the Dedinje Institute.
In Serbia, more than 50,000 people die each year from heart disease and blood vessels, and the number of young victims of a heart attack in their twenties is of particular concern. It is only through the rapid detection and active treatment of high blood pressure, the most important risk factor, that the dramatic death rate can be reduced.
– Doctors in Serbia are making every effort every day to inform patients about the need for regular medication. High blood pressure does not hurt, it is a serious disease and can develop smoothly until it causes serious systemic lesions such as stroke, heart attack, heart disease, aneurysmal diseases, impaired vision, liver damage and kidney – explains prof. Dr. Nebojša Tasić.
That's why regular medications are essential for the lives of these patients and doctors now worry that after a misinterpretation, there could be a massive withdrawal of needed treatments from patients .
– Each drug also has possible side effects. On the instructions of the drug, there are always possible contraindications. Doctors are obliged to inform patients about the most important side effects, but also remind them of the patient's obligation to report any adverse reactions to his doctor if it occurs. Due to the potential photosensitivity of some drugs, as well as for other reasons, it is not advisable for patients with high blood pressure to expose them to the sun for long – explains teacher. Dr. Nebojša Tasić.
Our reputed cardiologist says that medications containing hydrochlorothiazide are not harmful to health, that their benefits are several times greater than the potential risk and that patients do not discontinue their treatment on their own.
What do dermatologists say?
– In Serbia, no case of melanoma-like cancer has been reported as a result of the use of medicinal products containing hydrochlorothiazide and is used in the treatment of arterial hypertension and heart failure – says a dermatologist, teacher. Dr. Snežana Minić of the Clinical Center of Dermatology (KCS).
She further explains that melanoma-free skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in humans, especially the elderly, and that it is about skin and lighter eyes. It's also a type of cancer that does not metastasize and is not so dangerous. Denmark is a country in which people live in extremely clear paths, bright eyes and hair, which are otherwise prone to skin cancer and skin cancer.
– Antihypertensive drugs are essential and should not be interrupted by their intake. Avoiding sun exposure is a recommendation that concerns the entire population, especially hypertensive patients, regardless of the type of treatment used. Seniors must also limit their stay in the sun, regardless of their state of health – warns the teacher. Dr. Snežana Minić.
