Doctors have warned that a mutated form of the influenza virus, for which there is no vaccine, arrives in Serbia in mid-December. It is a mixture of strains of swine (AH1N1) and seasonal (type B) viruses, which merge to give a completely new and much more dangerous form.
Experts have also warned that a massive flu outbreak in Serbia is expected in mid-January, when people will resume work after the New Year and the Christmas holidays. The attack primarily concerns people over 65, pregnant women and chronic patients, then children.
Dr. Zarko Rankovic, a specialist in infection, announces that the first version of the AH1N1 flu will arrive in December. This one will very quickly mutate because it will connect to the type B virus.
Every year, the same epidemiological situation is involved in respiratory infections. Sudden changes in time, fame, and family gatherings are leading to a growing number of people in the second half of December. It is therefore perfectly normal to expect the appearance of a less severe form of influenza AH1N1. However, he will quickly change his structure, mutate and become much more dangerous, with a much more difficult clinical picture – says Rankovic.
He advises citizens to vaccinate in all cases, although vaccination does not stand up to the mutated form.
– That there is a seasonal or mutated virus, vaccination is necessary. Especially in people aged 65, chronic patients and pregnant women. The vaccine serves to maintain the state of the body and to prevent serious conditions that can be fatal for patients, such as a complete collapse of the body, breathing difficulties, coma and even death. The only problem is that modified genetic compounds viruses represent a combination of several types of flu and that no type of vaccination can eradicate them. However, at least 40% can lessen the severity of the disease – explains the interlocutor.
Dr. Bran Grujic, general practitioner, agrees. According to her, the peak of influenza activity is expected in January, while the number of patients could increase significantly.
– Inflammation of the throat, nasal leakage, cough, weakness, increase in fever and muscle pain are the main symptoms of any seasonal flu, even mutated, and it is mainly treated with preparations against cold and vitamins. But if the disease lasts more than seven days and patients do not notice improvement in recovery, it is mandatory to contact the doctor because their advice is very important in the days when we have two types of viruses. Admittedly, the epicenter of infectious activity is now expected in January after school holidays and school holidays, while the activity of the virus is the strongest – says Dr. Grujić and informs the citizens that it is very important to eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, to take liquids, to prepare, to fight colds, avoid gatherings inside.
