Over the past four years, the Blood Transfusion Institute has recorded 11 HIV infections among volunteer donors of this valuable fluid, of which 14,793 HIV cases have been detected in one year, said the director of the 39 Institute, Dr. Gordana Rasovic, in Pobjeda.
At yesterday's session of the Health, Labor and Social Affairs Committee of the Assembly, dedicated to the World Day against HIV and AIDS, she stressed that every unit of blood was undergoing a test for HIV, hepatitis and syphilis.
Once the virus is established, as Dr. Rasovic explained, a certificate from the Institute of Public Health is required.
"Upon receipt of this confirmation, we inform the donor and we forward it to epidemiologists and infectious diseases," said Dr. Rasovic, noting that in the coming years, they plan to improve test methods.
At the session yesterday, they did not announce the latest data on HIV and AIDS patients, but they told the Institute of Public Health that they they expect the statistics to be at the level of last year.
According to Dr. Alma Čičić, last year there were 25 new cases of infection, of which 12 had AIDS and 4 others
died.
"Since 1989, when the first case was recorded, until the end of last year, 254 cases of HIV were recorded. It is estimated that there would be many more between 300 and 500, "said Dr. Cicic, stating that in most cases the way of transmission was a sexual affair, 56% of which was homosexual.
Although the incidence of patients in our country is low at the moment, it warns against a high percentage of high risk behaviors and the fact that unprotected sex is increasingly practiced in the general population. .
