It's not uncommon for companies like Google to work on new generation operating systems. What is interesting is that Fuchsia is not based on the Linux kernel, which is the heart of Android and Chrome OS. The Fuchsia kernel, called Zircon, uses a completely different approach than larger monolithic Linux kernels. And building a new kernel is not a trivial matter.

The purpose of these projects is not always a product that will come out on the market. It's often a test to see how certain technologies can go far.
