BELGRADE – The Ministry of Culture announced today that singing with the spindle, which is part of the intangible cultural heritage of Serbia, was on the representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity of the world. 39; UNESCO.

The UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Preservation of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, at its 13th Ordinary Session held in Mauritius, was adopted today.

"Gusle is a symbol of the Serbian national memory in the long battle for maintenance in the past, but not only.There are no people in the history of today where this ancient element of cultural heritage is present, respected and loved.The celebrations for such a status belong to guslar associations and to many faithful listeners our cultural space, "said Defense Minister Dragan Hamovic.

In 2016, the Ministry of Culture and Information recommended to the relevant committee of experts the appointment of a gusle on the list of UNESCO.

The nomination dossier was prepared by the Center for Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Ethnographic Museum of Belgrade, in cooperation with the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and supported by the Association of Serbian associations gusle, guslar, individuals, local authorities, institutions, non-governmental organizations and professional associations.

Singing with the Gusle is Serbia's third inscription on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO.

The inscriptions ensure better international visibility and communities are encouraged to actively contribute to the preservation and transmission of the selected element of their heritage, said the Ministry of Culture.
