The second foreign language as an optional subject in the fifth year will be scored numerically by the teachers and the final grade will be awarded on average – this will be prescribed by the new bill.
It is a bill amending the law on the bases of the education system. According to the law of 2017, the second foreign language received the status of optional subject and thus a descriptive note for the fifth year students of this school year. This caused controversy in the professional audience. Even then, the Minister of Education, Mladen Sarcevic, had indicated that changes would be made.
As explained by the Ministry of Education for "Blic", the proposal will soon be presented to the National Assembly, specifically in December.
– It is apparent from the above provisions of the draft law that the assessment of another foreign language, as an optional subject, will be numbered and that the grade will "go to average". It is also expected that the overall success of pupils from the second to the eighth grade will be determined at the end of the second semester on the basis of the arithmetic calculation of the compulsory subjects and the electoral program of the second foreign language, as well as the notes of the rule from the sixth grade – for example at the ministry.
"Better to learn if it is noted"
The announced changes are welcomed by teachers.
– The second foreign language of introduction has always been evaluated numerically and this assessment was on average. This has changed this year and has been shown to be descriptive. Seriousness in making such decisions is necessary. Children take more seriously and learn more foreign languages if the grade is average, explained the French teacher Maja Marjanovic of the school "Skadarlija".
