The Earth's climate in 2030 should be comparable to what it was three million years ago, according to researchers in a study published Monday at the US Science Academy (PNAS).

This period was the middle of the Pliocene, when the Earth was in drought, that North America and South America had not yet merged, that Greenland had not yet was frozen and that the level of the ocean was 18 meters higher than today.

The average temperature was 1.8 to 3.6 degrees Celsius above the current temperature.

"We will make dramatic changes in a very short time," said Jack Williams, professor of Earth Sciences and expert in paleoecology and climatology at the University of Wisconsin, Medison.

If releases of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere continue as they are now, the researchers estimate that in 2150, the country will return to its original state 50 million years ago, at the same time. The frozen caps of the Earth's poles must have been dissolved for a long time. As a result, Greenland will not become green again in the next century, Viliams told AFP.

Meanwhile, the level of the ocean will not increase every 18 meters. But the sudden warming will surprise living species that took millions of years to develop in their present form.

"Many species will disappear," notes the co-author of the study.

"This indicates that we can influence our history and the history of the Earth, so we understand the current changes and are adjusting ourselves," he concluded.
