Since China joined the World Trade Organization in 2001, China's role in this system has become increasingly important as its exports have been multiplied by seven and imports by six, said the WTO Director General Roberto Azevedo.
China held its seventh Trade Policy Review (TPR) from July 11 to 13, in which Azevedo told Chinese media that China's major achievements during this period include the withdrawal of more than 500 millions of people out of poverty.
The WTO chief expressed his belief that China would be part of efforts to make this organization even more effective and to find problems with other members to improve the system.
"This system has recently been under pressure because of trade tensions around the world," Azevedo said. "So the way to think and react to these things is to be ready to do what is needed to make the system more efficient, even stronger."
According to Azevedo, the World Trade Organization has done everything to ensure that sanctions and restrictive measures "serve no one".
