NEW YORK – Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova will finally meet at the US Open in their very first game.
The former champions of the US Open, two of the biggest stars of women's tennis, were scheduled to play an opening game in the draw that will take place Thursday for the major final of the year.
Williams and Sharapova clashed in the final of the other three major tournaments and at the 2012 Olympics, but never clashed at the US Open. Williams is 19-2 in his WTA circuit clashes, but this unbalanced number should not do much to deter the hype around what will be the first-round marquee match at Flushing Meadows, which begins on Monday.

Williams will start another bid to win the 24th Grand Slam singles title. Sharapova is not the same player as when she won the 2006 US Open Championship – or defeated Williams two years earlier in the Wimbledon final – but she remains one of the most popular New York fans .
The men's draw allowed Roger Federer, number 3, to be in the first half of the draw, which means he could play Novak Djokovic, first in the standings, in the semifinals. They met in the final at Wimbledon, where Djokovic won the deciding match in the fifth set.
Federer and No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal have never faced each other in New York and could only do so this year if both qualify for the final.
