Will the first open American match between Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova be a good match in terms of quality of play? Probably not. Does this promise a rich entertainment value anyway? Damn, yes.
The focus will be on the stilted handshakes, shouted exclamations, facial expressions, late camera between dots. It is always satisfying to see two people who do not like each other in public settle their differences with a blurred ball.
Sharapova's book in 2017 is a major development. Unstoppable: My life up here, which proved to be a lot more worrying about Serena Williams than anyone – including Serena Williams – was expecting "One hundred percent rumors," said Williams, questioned about passages in the book describing her crying after the Wimbledon final in 2004, won by Sharapova. "Guttural sobs, those who make you fly, those who scare you," wrote Sharapova.
They also tackled everyone's romantic story. Here Williams takes a shot in a 2013 Rolling stone profile:
"She starts every interview with 'I'm so happy. I'm so lucky, "it's so boring," Serena said aloud. "She will still not be invited to cool parties. And, hey, if she wants to be with the black-hearted guy, go for it. (It is assumed that she is talking about Sharapova, who is now dating Grigor Dimitrov, one of Serena's former rumors.)
Sharapova reacted by drawing attention to what was then only a rumor that a relationship would have been established between Williams and his coach Patrick Mourataglou. "If she wants to talk about something personal, maybe she should talk about her relationship and her boyfriend who was married and who is divorcing and has kids."
Both Nike athletes have also sought to get money over time. Sharapova won the (albeit doubtful) title of the best-paid athlete for years, even as Williams piled title after major title, stating that she was the most dominant figure. It is not difficult to develop a subtext about race, body type and marketing opportunities in America. (Serena is at the top of this year's edition, although it is supposed to be calculated.)
It is this personal story that gives all its weight to the ox because the rivalry on the ground has unbalanced their entire adult life. Sharapova won two of his first three matches, all played in 2004, the year of his 17 years. Since then, Williams has won 18 straight games. Only three of those 18 went to a third set. Williams beat her in the finals of the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon, although it will be the first meeting of any kind at the American Open.
It's been over three years since the last time they went there. The two men were about to play a fourth round match at the Roland-Garros last year, but the same day, Serena Williams retired from the tournament due to 39, an injury to the breastplate.
Sharapova, who has won five major tournaments and probably had more if it were for injuries and / or Serena, is still one of the best players of his era. This may seem like a close match for the uninitiated, but in reality they are at very different times in their careers. While Sharapova served his 15-month ban on doping, Williams won his 22nd and 23rd major titles. This year, Sharapova had a quiet season in February, March and May due to a shoulder injury that required surgery. She did not win any notable wins, except for third-seed Caroline Wozniacki's surprise at the Australian Open in January. It has been 2-4 since returning to the road and is now ranked 87th in the world, which explains how this first-round match came about. (Or open your third eye, the desired powers.)
Meanwhile, Serena has participated in the final of two of the last four major leagues and ranks 8th. She had the deadly look at her latest focus at the US Open in Toronto, scoring her first win against current Naomi Osaka in the final, before a spasm on the back did not forces to withdraw. As long as his body cooperates, Williams is always at the top. This is no longer the case for Sharapova for some time now.
