Bianca Andreescu was "therefore the best tennis player" in this woman's final victory over Serena Williams in singles at the US Open, according to tennis channel Catherine Whitaker.

Andreescu surprised Williams by beating her in straight sets Saturday to clinch her first career Grand Slam title.

The Canadian was in the main draw of the US Open for the first time and won 6-3, 7-5 at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

After taking the first set relatively easily, Andreescu took a 5-1 lead in the second and got a point in the Championship.

Williams, however, showed all his experience and struggled to tie the game at 5-5.

But Andreescu still had enough in the tank to cross the line 7-5.

And Whitaker, speaking on Tennis's podcast, said she never thought Andreescu would not win the match despite William's return to the second set.

"At the championship point at 5-1 from the end, Serena hit a forehand and that's her first set winner," Whitaker said.

"And then she won 16 of the following 20 points to return to 5-5.

"I do not know about you, but at that moment I thought," Thank goodness, Bianca Andreescu is human "because I was beginning to wonder if she would really feel any tension or nerves.

"I was really wondering if she would.

"The nerves and the tension for [Williams] were somewhat relieved because she had nothing to lose at this stage.

"So I put this trend reversal completely under pressure and tension on both sides of the net.

"This has increased for Andreescu to a point that she has never known before and this has slightly increased from Serena.

"And yet, I do not know about you, [but] I never really thought that Andreescu was not going to win it because she was really the best tennis player. "
