Serena Williams met and defeated her rival Maria Sharapova at many tennis tournaments – Wimbledon, Australian and French Open – but she never had a chance to face Sharapova at the American Open in New York. It's all about to change.

For the first time, the two biggest tennis players will meet on the court at the American Open, announced Thursday, after the eighth-seeded Williams has drawn the unsuccessful Sharapova, according to the Los Angeles Times .

As the Times notes:

Former US Open champions have clashed in the finals of the other three majors – the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon – but had never crossed the path of Flushing Meadows before. Williams dominated Sharapova with 19 wins out of 21.

However, despite the domination of Williams, Williams, 37, and Sharapova, 32, faced the injury challenge leading up to Monday's game.

The two men were to participate in last year's French Open before a pectoral injury forced Williams to retire, and Sharapova missed most of the season with injuries, the New York Times reported.

But the US Open's "first round selection match" is eagerly awaited, the Associated Press says:

Williams will start another bid to win the 24th Grand Slam singles title. Sharapova is not the same player as when she won the 2006 US Open Championship – or defeated Williams two years earlier in the Wimbledon final – but she remains one of the most popular players among New fans. York.
