The 36-year-old man who killed seven people during a shootout in western Texas over the weekend was a "violent and aggressive man" who liked to target animals before he target the public, said a neighbor.
Rocio Gutierrez, who lived next to gunman Seth Ator in Odessa, told the Associated Press this week that Ator was often shooting at animals, mostly rabbits, at all hours of the night.
"We were afraid of him because you could know what kind of person he was just looking at him," Gutierrez said. "He was not nice, he was not friendly, he was not polite."

The police killed Ator Saturday in front of an animated movie theater in Odessa after a wave of violence stretching for 10 kilometers. His rampage also injured about two dozen people.
This was not his first confrontation with the law.
The online court records showed that Ator had been arrested in 2001 for a crime offense that would not have prevented him from buying guns legally in Texas.

Police said the arrest had occurred in the county where Waco is located, hundreds of kilometers east of Odessa. The online court records showed that he was then charged with the offense of intrusion and evasion. He pleaded guilty to a deferred prosecution agreement in which the charge had been lifted after 24 months of probation, according to the records.
According to the Associated Press, the federal law defines nine categories that would legally prevent a person from owning a firearm. The included categories being found guilty of a crime, an indictment of domestic violence offense, tried as a "mental defect" or committed in a psychiatric facility, being the subject of a court order; prohibition or mandate in progress. Investigators said that Ator had no warrants outstanding at the time of the shooting.

Governor Greg Abbott tweeted On Monday, Ator did not check the background of the weapon used in Odessa. He did not give details and a spokesman referred questions to the Texas Department of Public Safety, who did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Officials from Odessa released Monday the names of people killed, aged 15 to 57 years. Edwin Peregrino, 25, was among the dead. He left his parents' house to see what the tumult is about; the 29-year-old Mary Granados, murdered in her truck of the American postal service; and 15-year-old high school student Leilah Hernandez, who was coming out of a car dealership.
