A terrible crash on a rural California freeway has left nine people dead, including seven children, officials said.

The head-on collision happened around 8 p.m. on New Years Day on Highway 33, about 90 minutes north of Bakersfield, when the driver of a 2013 Dodge apparently pulled off the road, Constable Rory said Marks at the Los Angeles Times.

The motorist, a 28-year-old man, then overcorrected – and ended up slamming into a northbound Ford carrying seven children and an adult, authorities said.

The impact set the Ford on fire. All the victims were declared dead at the scene and had not yet been identified on Saturday.

“We have no witnesses other than the people who found it,” Marks told the newspaper. “We are looking for help if anyone knows anything.”

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
