The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday announced a recall of certain pet foods from Sportmix that contain high levels of a toxin. At the time of publication, 28 animal deaths and eight illnesses have been reported under the recall.
While the investigation is ongoing, people who have purchased Sportmix feed should be aware that this brand is linked to the deaths. The pet food in question was manufactured by Midwestern Pet Foods and contains high levels of a toxin called aflatoxin.
Aflatoxin is “a toxin produced by mold, according to the FDA statement. Aspergillus flavus which can grow on corn and other grains used as ingredients in pet foods. “At high levels, it can cause harm to pets; symptoms associated with ingestion of the toxin include laziness, loss of appetite, vomiting, jaundice, and diarrhea. In some cases, it can damage the liver and even be fatal.
If you have Sportmix pet food in your possession, the FDA suggests that you do not give it to your pets and consult a vet if they have ingested it recently. In the organization’s reminder, they wrote that their investigation is ongoing and as more information becomes available they will update their post. According to the press release:
While this pet food recall is still ongoing, we share the facts we have so far as the levels of aflatoxin found in the recalled pet foods are potentially fatal. We are working on this evolving situation quickly and will continue to educate the public as new information becomes available. This is in service of the FDA’s mission to protect human and animal health.
