Several Mississippi university athletes took a knee on Saturday while "The Stars and Stripes" played before their basketball game.
The symbolic action of men's team members Ole Miss came in response to a Confederation rally that was taking place near their arena, according to The Associated Press.

The team was facing Georgia and, as the team lined up near the starting line for the national anthem, six players knelt down, as evidenced by a photo of the action. Two other players would have joined them as the song drew to a close.

Not far away, two pro-Confederate groups staged a march for a Confederate statue in the region, according to WLBT.
Various student groups organized counter-demonstrations on campus on Thursday and Friday. Saturday began at the town square and ended at the Confederate monument in the heart of the Ole Miss campus.
