LOGAN – The man charged with the murder of his five-year-old niece Elizabeth Shelley was charged with two new crimes after the Cache County Prosecutor's Office received new evidence.
Alexander Whipple, 21, was charged on Wednesday with the 1st district court of raping a child and sodomy on a child, two first-degree crimes.
The Cache County attorney's office said in a press release that the Utah Medical Examiner's office had not yet determined the cause of Elizabeth's death.
Whipple also faces charges of aggravated murder and child abduction, two first-degree crimes; two counts of obstruction of justice, a second degree crime; and abuse or desecration of a body, third degree crime.
He appeared for the first time in court Monday, the same day as the public.
In exchange for information on the location of Elizabeth's body, Cache County lawyer James Swink abolished the death penalty. Whipple agreed and told the police where to find his niece's body.
Elizabeth's body was found by the Logan Police Department half a block from her home on May 29, just days after her first disappearance on May 25.
The funeral of the girl
took place on Tuesday and the bereaved community showed a wave of support for her and her family. Later in the day, Elizabeth rests in Logan City Cemetery.
