SF Giants news: Johnny Cueto placed on 10-day IL

And so the churn continues. On Wednesday afternoon, before their series final against the Arizona Diamondbacks, the San Francisco Giants placed right-hander Johnny Cueto on the 10-day injured list, citing right flexor strain. This happened just a week after Anthony DeSclafani was also placed on the 10-day IL.

Infielder Thairo Estrada, who was recalled from AAA Sacramento after being made a very recent option, takes Cueto’s place on the roster.

It seemed likely that Evan Longoria would be the one to join the roster if anyone was placed on the IL, but apparently it’s still a few days away. It is quite possible that Estrada will be chosen in the coming days to make way for Longoria.

This is Cueto’s second trip to IL this year, after missing a few starts at the start of the season. He’s had a strong, but not a great season, with a 3.89 ERA, 3.93 PIF and 92 strikeouts for 24 walks in 104 innings. Hopefully he just misses a start.

As for Estrada, the Giants can add another right-handed stick to the bench. Estrada hit .303 / .376 / .447 in 85 plate appearances this year, good for a 123 OPS +.
