SF Giants news: Kevin Gausman on the list of family medical emergencies

The San Francisco Giants made a flurry of movement on Friday before their first game of the second half against the St. Louis Cardinals. Most notable is that ace Kevin Gausman, who was originally scheduled to start Friday’s game, has been placed on the family emergency medical list.

Gausman’s wife is currently in hospital with complications from her pregnancy. Looks like everything is fine, but suffice it to say that we will keep the family in our thoughts.

Logan Webb, who was recalled from the AAA, is leaving Gausman. Webb has been one of the Giants’ best pitchers this year, so they’re in good hands.

Two other players join Webb as additions to the roster: outfielder Mike Tauchman, who has been reinstated from the 10-day injured roster, and right-handed reliever Jay Jackson, whose contract was selected at AAA.

Jackson signed a minor league contract with the Giants during the offseason, but started the season injured. Since returning to the field, he has been turned off, pitching 11 innings and allowing just 3 hits, 1 walks and 0 runs, with 18 strikeouts.

To make room on the roster for those additions, the Giants opted for infielder Jason Vosler. That, combined with Gausman’s placement on the family medical emergency list and Joey Bart’s option earlier in the week, freed up the necessary three spaces.

Jackson, however, was also due to be added to the 40-man roster, and the Giants made room for that by moving third baseman Evan Longoria to the 60-day IL. He won’t be able to come back before August 5, but should be ready to come back then.

The commotion continues.

Hope all is well in the Gausman family.
