INDIANAPOLIS – A upright piano used by John Lennon to write The Beatles songs was auctioned off to Jim Irsay. Just "A day in the life" of the owner of the Colts of Indianapolis.
Irsay tweeted Saturday that he was "delighted" to own the instrument that Lennon had used to compose songs for the album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" of The Beatles.
The Indianapolis Star reports that the piano, manufactured in the 1870s, was auctioned at GottaHaveRockandRoll.com, with a minimum bid of $ 575,000. The site estimated that it would sell for between $ 800,000 and $ 1.2 million. Until Saturday afternoon, the final price had not been announced yet.
Irsay described piano ownership as "a responsibility that I take seriously, thinking of future generations."
The Star reports that Irsay had already bought guitars belonging to music legends Jerry Garcia, Prince and Bob Dylan.
