Colombian singers Shakira and Carlos Vives have appeared in court in Madrid to respond to allegations of a Cuban singer and producer who allegedly plagiarized his work in their award-winning film La Bicicleta.
Shakira smiled as she entered the courtyard of downtown Madrid on Wednesday. She did not answer the journalists' questions.
Shakira and Vives rejected Livan Rafael Castellanos' allegations that La Bicicleta, which means "The Bicycle" in English, contains lyrics, a rhythm and a melody similar to those of his 1997 song Yo te quiero tanto.
Shakira, whose full name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, told the judge that Castellanos' song "looks nothing like … The Bicicleta, the melody is different, the music is different, the subject is different".
"My [song] talk about my homeland, it's a salute for my homeland, Barranquilla, Colombia, not Cuba, "said Shakira, according to Europa Press. "It's different."
Vives, 57, who composed Yo te quiero tanto with music producer Andrés Castro, also said that he did not know the song or Livam, as it is called Castellanos.
The Bicicleta has won two of the three Grand Grammy Latino Awards of 2016, including its title and record of the year.
In the song, Shakira and Vives sing "That you knowyou do not want you to be (I dream of you and I love you so much), while Livam says "Yo te quiero, yo te quiero tanto" (I like you, I love you so much).
"There is nothing similar about it, no harmony, no theme," said Shakira, who hummed several fragments of his song during his court appearance.
She said La Bicicleta is a folk song that pays tribute to Colombia, while Livam's is a "Dominican salsa" that "tries to be a folk song" but is "a mess".
Livam, who works in Madrid as a composer and producer, told the court that Castro had access to his song through his representative. His complaint also concerns the music of Castro and Sony.
"It's as if they touched one of my children … they stole me," said Livam, on the verge of tears.
Shakira, who lives in Barcelona with FC Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué, and their two sons, will again appear in Spanish court in June for allegedly avoiding 14.5 million euros, an accusation denied by the lawyers of the defense of the singer.
With her mix of Latin and Arabic rhythms and rock influences, Shakira is one of the biggest stars in Latin America, recording world-wide hits with songs such as Hips Do not Lie and Whenever, Wherever.
She has sold more than 60 million records.
