Last year, Sandy Rzucek remembered something that had pulled her from sleep and she sat in bed. "I heard the Holy Spirit say," Shanann, "" she said, muttering the name.

Shanann Watts' pregnant body and her children's bodies, Bella, 4, and Celeste, 3, were found in August in an isolated oil field where Shanann's husband, Chris, worked. He later pleaded guilty to the murders and serving five life sentences – three consecutive and two concurrent – after Shanann's family agreed to no longer be able to apply for the death penalty.

Rzucek, her husband and son shared their reactions to Chris Watts' recently released five-hour confessions to law enforcement. They explained how they fought the deaths and explained why Watts had committed the killings.

Watts initially denied his involvement in the disappearance of his wife and children in August, and worried about their well-being with a local news channel. He pleaded guilty in November.

Shanann Watts' brother, Frank Rzucek Jr., said that they did not think Chris Watts had killed his wife "until we saw this interview" on television.

Last week, the authorities released a five-hour interview with Watts, recorded in February. Watts spoke of his state of mind in the weeks and months leading up to his conviction and explained what led him to plead guilty to his crimes.

"Why do you think he's telling the truth now?" asked host Phil McGraw.

Rzucek stated that he believed that Watts had spoken honestly about the murders because "I think it eats him up."

"I think it was more than happy to talk to someone for five hours, sitting in a box 24/7," said Rzucek, the godfather of these children.

Chris Watts said that he did not want someone to lie to him after killing his wife and daughters.

"We loved him like a son and Frankie loved him as a brother," Sandy Rzucek said. "I just do not understand."

At an appearance last week in "Dr. Phil", a family attorney from Watts said that Bella knew that her mother and sister had just been killed – and feared that she be the next.

"Please Dad, do not do what you just did in Cece," says Bella, according to lawyer Steven Lambert.

Sandy Rzucek said the hardest part was knowing that her granddaughter had seen her sister die and beg for her life.

Rzucek added that she had also felt the presence of her daughter and grandchildren when the authorities had told them that they had discovered their bodies separately.

"She told me that she was at peace," Rzucek said.

Rzucek said that Bella had told her "I can go to Disney World whenever I want it."

A new mission

Rzucek said the killings had given her a new mission: to comfort women whose children had disappeared.

"I'm still on a mission for my daughter and my grandchildren because they wanted to live, they had the right to live and they had a wonderful life," she said.

"They loved each other, they loved their family, they loved everyone around them."

She placed her hand on the top of her chest.

"Mom is here," she says. "And I'm going to defend them, Dr. Phil, if you'll allow me, you'll help me."

"We have been together for 38 years, our children are everything for us and our big babies all for us," said Rzucek.
