Indians ace Shane Bieber recently tested positive for COVID-19, said base operations president Chris Antonetti Mandy Bell from MLB.com and other journalists on Thursday. Bieber had “Very, very mild symptoms”, according to Antonetti, and the Indians hope that the right-hander will join them at the camp in the coming days.
There is, of course, no more valuable member of the Indian staff than Bieber, who won the American League’s Cy Young Award in 2020 and was possibly the sport’s first pitcher. The 25-year-old achieved an incredible 1.63 / 2.52 SIERA ERA with a 41.1% take-out rate, 7.1% walk rate and a 48.4 ground ball score. % in 77 1/3 sleeves.
Assuming he returns to health soon, Bieber is expected to take the ball for Cleveland on opening day. The club’s rotation has undergone changes this offseason with the exchange of Carlos Carrasco at the Mets, but it still looks like a talented band with Aaron Civale, Zach Plesac and Triston McKenzie among those who continue to supplement Bieber.
