Shang-Chi: Disney offers sturdy theatrical windows to the Eternals and more

The bad news about the same day streaming of “Halloween Kills” is erased as Disney stays in theaters for the rest of the year.

National theaters just got the opposite of a bad Friday night news dump. Disney has confirmed that they have made their long-awaited decision on how long the movie exclusivity will last for their next wave of releases. This suggests that the initial success of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” did the show some good.

Five of their next six titles, including Marvel’s “Eternals,” which are all slated to open during the remainder of 2021, won’t reach Disney + or Hulu until at least 45 days after their theatrical release. Their “Encanto” animation, which opens on Thanksgiving, will hit the streaming platform after 30 days.

That’s almost as much as theaters could hope for. Most films, regardless of their performance, have reached 45-day home availability. Disney, Warner Bros. and Universal all released it the same day on various platforms, with Universal and other companies steadily switching to Premium VOD after three weeks.

It should be noted that four of the six films are from their 20th Century Fox production stock. Because of the deals they inherited, these titles give Disney less flexibility. But these dates show that they have something to add to their streaming platform, even at 45 days.

“Encanto” will arrive on Disney + just before Christmas, the perfect time to maximize its response. Last year, Universal released “The Croods: A New Age” on PVOD, also a Thanksgiving release, on PVOD for the holidays to seemingly important viewing.

“Encanto” by source will have no additional charge for the Disney +. These counters are specifically intended for the domestic market, with decisions on other territories to be taken at the local level.
