Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings introduced Marvel fans to a whole new corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that had yet to be explored by the franchise. As such, Chris Townsend, Marvel’s longtime visual effects supervisor, had his work cut out for him when it came to working with the studio’s visual effects providers. In one example, Townsend worked with Sean Walker and his team at Weta Digital to get the perfect models on both the Great Protector Dragon and the Dweller-in-Darkness.

Another moment that fans of the film can’t help but talk about is a beautiful sequence that unfolded when Wenwu (Tony Leung) unlocked the map of the mystical town of Ta Lo. As Townsend tells us, he wanted to make sure Marvel didn’t do anything that has never been done before yet.

“We were trying to find something unique and aesthetically pleasing for the film. Water was a key part of the film in regards to the village of Ta Lo that we find ourselves in this mythical place. village by the lake. There is a water dragon. There is a dragon that uses water. Water is an elemental force of beauty and gentle nature, and all that sort of thing. so became a good point of contact and so I wanted to try to use the water in a way that we could try to use it to help describe the moment and just to reveal the map, ”Townsend said. .

The filmmaker said as he put his head to Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton and production designer Sue Chan on what they could do.

“We were sort of thinking and sort of came up with this idea like, ‘Well, what if we could somehow have some water flowing out of it. something like a waterfall or something? And then I said, “Well, rather than flowing, how about it just emanating from the walls of this beautifully sculpted ensemble,” he adds.

The footage in question was designed by Sydney-based Fin Design, who only worked on these shots for the film. According to Townsend, it took over a year for this streak to get done right.

Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and produced by Kevin Feige and Jonathan Schwartz, with Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso and Charles Newirth as executive producers. David Callaham & Destin Daniel Cretton & Andrew Lanham wrote the script for the film, which is in theaters now.
