Shaquille O’Neal has been one of Ben Simmons’ biggest critics amid the endless former Rookie of the Year drama with the Philadelphia 76ers. Simmons clearly wants out, but the Sixers have held on. For his part, Shaq has a little advice for the All-Star point guard.
Shaq was recently on CBS Sports Network’s Tiki and Tierney program and he didn’t take back his post for the Sixers star:
“One, he’s not showing up. As a player you have to be able to be real with yourself, ”O’Neal (h / t Michael Kaskey-Blomain of CBS Sports). “You have to be aggressive and he was definitely exposed last year in the playoffs, he didn’t want to shoot.
“You have to look at yourself in the mirror and say, ‘Am I as good as can be? He does it wrong. He could have walked into the office, said ‘hey, my feelings are hurt. You guys haven’t stood up for me. I would like to apply for a profession in a professional manner. The question is, does anyone want it? I’m not paying $ 200 million for a guy who won’t be aggressive and shoot in the playoffs.
While his comments may be harsh, Shaq is actually not wrong here. One of the biggest hurdles for the Sixers in terms of finding a suitable business partner for Ben Simmons is his huge contract. The 25-year-old signed a $ 169.5 million extension in 2019, which ties him until the 2024-25 season. Technically it’s not $ 200 million, but you get Shaq’s point.
The Sixers are reported to have tried to convince Simmons to stay in Philly. However, their efforts fell on deaf ears, as Ben has clearly already made up his mind.
