Uma Thurman admits her “darkest secret” in a Washington Post editorial published Tuesday.
The “Kill Bill” star, 51, wrote the personal essay in criticizing the Texas abortion ban.
Thurman revealed she had an abortion in her late teens, writing that “a certain light will shine, reaching women and girls who might be ashamed of not being able to protect themselves and having no agency. on them “.
“This law is yet another discriminatory tool against those who are economically disadvantaged, and often, indeed, against their partners,” Thurman said.
She continued, “Women and children of wealthy families retain all the choices in the world and run little risk. I am also distressed by the fact that the law pits citizen against citizen, creating new vigilantes who will attack these disadvantaged women, denying them the choice not to have children whom they are not equipped to care for. , or extinguishing their hopes for the future family they might choose.
In her story, Thurman notes that her decision at a young age, when she felt unable to provide a stable home, enabled her to have children when she was ready and able to do so properly.
Thurman is mom to daughter Maya and son Levon with ex-husband Ethan Hawke. She also has a daughter, Luna, with ex-fiance Arpad Busson.
“This has been my darkest secret so far,” she said. “I am 51 years old and I share it with you from the house where I raised my three children, who are my pride and my joy.”
Thurman wrote: “To all of you – to the women and girls of Texas, who fear being traumatized and stalked by predatory bounty hunters; to all women indignant at seeing the rights of our bodies confiscated by the State; and to all of you who are made vulnerable and subjected to shame because you have a womb – I say: I see you. To have courage. You are beautiful. You remind me of my daughters.
