Shelby GT-S Ford Mustang is a supercharged pony car for rent

Although this may seem like another Hertz special series rental car, the Ford Shelby Mustang GT-S will be heading to a local Sixt Rent-A-Car.

The car rental company announced Thursday that the Shelby GT-S will equip its rental fleets starting this summer. Based on the Mustang GT, each Shelby GT-S will have more power thanks to its supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engine. The cars will come from the Shelby American store in Las Vegas. Without sharing the final specifications, the company said the tenants would be treated to more than 600 horses. However, a 10-speed automatic transmission will be the only choice. We doubt that many customers would be interested (or even know how to operate) a manual transmission.

Shelby will also adapt the suspension to improve performance and modernize Brembo brakes for better stopping power. Attentive spectators will also notice the unique body work of the Shelby GT-S. The grille, bonnet and lower bumper are unique to the Sixt rental car.

Two color combinations will be available, both based on Sixt's corporate colors: a black body with orange stripes or a yellow-orange body with black stripes. Our choice is the last.

The interior will have contrasting yellow-orange shades on the black leather with special "Shelby" stitching for seats and floor mats.

Like so many other special car rental editions, Shelby will serialize the Mustang GT-S models and add them to Shelby's official registry. Once cars are no longer used for rental purposes, Sixt plans to sell them and buyers will be able to work with Shelby American for further improvements. Fans will surely seize the opportunity to own a model as obscure as the Shelby GT-S. If you would like to test a supercharged rental car, Sixt will be happy to rent one from 55 US stores in the US starting this summer. The first 20 cars will be available for rental in Southern California, South Florida and Las Vegas.
