Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki says his plans for 2021 include ‘one-on-one battles’, ‘sequel’ and ‘shooters / RPG’

It’s all wild, vague, and I’m here for it

Yu Suzuki will always be a legend for what he managed to make with the Shenmue series. But a lot of people forget that he was one of the main guys at Sega AM2, streaming hits like After the burner and Space harrier; which appeared in Shenmue years later as an arcade game.

He’s over 60 years old now and still has as much passion for the industry as he did in the 80s: the long road to making Shenmue III is proof of that. So what’s the next step after this aforementioned awakening? Well i hope for more Shenmue so we can see the story through! It’s been over 20 years, after all.

As for the immediate future, things could get a bit wacky in his studio, Ys Net. He recently caught up with Famitsu to vaguely tease what will happen in 2021, and his keywords were “shooting / RPG”. Okay … I can sort of follow that.

He then shared his ambitions for 2021, which are “to reflect on the battles face to face”, and the phrase “more”. So the sequel is probably Shenmue IV, but I’m wondering if the “shooting” part is that Suzuki is bitten by the battle royale bug.

Either way, there is apparently plans, and Shenmue III didn’t bankrupt the studio (Suzuki said their performance was “good” earlier this year). I have high hopes for what we will see next.
