At least five agencies responded after someone called the Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office just after 8 a.m. on the second day of class, saying there was an active shooter inside Volunteer High School in Church Hill, according to a statement from the sheriff.
The statement said MPs responded immediately and began to search, and the investigation is continuing. The school evacuated all students, queuing them with their hands on their heads to the school buses, and they were taken to an armory to find their parents, county school principal Matt Hixson said. . Other schools have been closed temporarily as a precaution.
Hixson said the search will likely continue until the end of the school day, but he expects classes to resume Wednesday morning.
“We’ve been through COVID and a lot of closures and our intention is to keep students in school and help them learn,” he said.
WVLT-TV in Knoxville reported that Hawkins County EMS Ambulance Service officials confirmed that several ambulances were at the school and several patients were transported from the scene. The report did not provide any details of their injuries. WVLT later reported that the injuries did not appear to be related to a shooting.
A video released by the media showed a heavy police presence at the school, about 80 miles (129 kilometers) east of Knoxville in Hawkins County.
Schools in Hawkins County said on their website that the volunteer high school students were evacuated in school buses to a National Guard armory to be picked up by their parents.
“There has been an emergency at Volunteer High School,” the school statement read. “Our main concern right now is the safety of our students and staff; Please stay clear of the area to allow law enforcement and emergency personnel to access the area. “
Other schools in the county were also subject to a temporary lockdown which was later lifted, the statement said.
No further details were immediately released ahead of a scheduled press conference by the sheriff’s office.
