A California sheriff says she will not enforce Governor Gavin Newsom’s new coronavirus curfew, reports show.
Newsom on Thursday announced a number of measures, including limited home orders and nighttime curfews for non-essential work between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. every Saturday through December 21.
Fresno Sheriff Margaret Mims, however, said she would not penalize residents who violate the curfew, FOX 26 reported.

“We have a lot of things to do, including removing guns from gang members, stopping drug trafficking and saving children from internet predators,” Mims said in a video briefing Thursday afternoon.
“We are not going to make criminals into normally law-abiding citizens.”
The department will not be setting up checkpoints or arresting people to verify why they have passed curfew, Mims added.
Other law enforcement agencies are planning to take a curfew-like approach.
Merced County Sheriff’s Deputies, Madera Police, Visalia Police and Kings County MPs all plan to continue as usual rather than refocusing on curfew.
“We will continue to meet our law enforcement responsibilities to protect the community. We apply it through education and try to encourage compliance, ”said Madera Police Chief Dino Lawson.
“We are not going to carry out any of these orders,” Kings County Sheriff’s Commanding Officer David Dodd said. “The Kings County Oversight Board has asked us to take an educational approach. We will refer people to written guidelines to prevent the spread.”

The city of Fresno issued a statement on Thursday asking residents to “voluntarily comply” with the curfew, according to KMJ Now.
