SAN ANGELO, TX – The Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office released more information about Wednesday’s standoff.
As previously reported, on January 6, several law enforcement agencies were dispatched to La Quinta Inn over the report of a rollover accident. See: WATCH: Armed suspect trapped in wrecked vehicle
According to Tom Green County, on January 6 at around 10:30 a.m., investigators from the Criminal Investigations Division of the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office were monitoring a known criminal fugitive.
As the fugitive entered a vehicle, he observed investigators and began to flee in the vehicle. Investigators started to follow and when the fugitive turned a corner at high speed, he lost control and rolled the vehicle.
After the vehicle was stopped, the suspect was observed with a handgun and after refusing to exit the vehicle, he said he would not be taken alive. The investigators finally succeeded in defusing the situation and the suspect, Agapito Chappa III, born on 07/04/1980 surrendered without further incident.
Investigators were aided by the Patrol Division of the Sheriff’s Office, Tom Green County officers, the Texas Department of Public Safety and the San Angelo Police Department.
