A man and a woman were injured in the attack, which was reported by two hikers Saturday morning, the Wythe County Sheriff's Office announced in a press release.

Wythe County MPs then found and arrested a suspect, who was not named by the authorities.

The Wythe County Sheriff's Office, the Virginia State Police, the US Forest Service and the FBI are investigating this case, the sheriff's office announced. Part of the trail has been closed.

Authorities were able to track down the wounded with the help of GPS technology after sending an emergency notification via his cell phone, said Wythe County Sheriff, Keith Dunagan, to WSLS.

"The phone company informed us and that is when we went there and found the suspect and the victim," said the sheriff. "We had our whole team (tactical) on the ground, so (the suspect) wisely went right."

According to Dunagan, the injured woman was found only after walking six kilometers while bleeding, finding other hikers and asking for help.

Dunagan told CNN affiliate WSN that the woman would survive her injuries. Law enforcement officials would not comment on the state of the man.
