ANAHEIM – Shohei Ohtani didn’t win the Home Run Derby, but he still won a handful of Angels employees for his efforts.

Ohtani received $ 150,000 for his participation in the Derby, but he distributed it to around 30 Angels support staff to thank them for their work, sources said. Ohtani handed out checks to coaches, clubhouse employees and media relations staff on Friday.

Ohtani apparently decided he was going to use the money this way no matter what the outcome. The Derby winner received $ 1 million, while the runner-up received $ 500,000.

Ohtani was eliminated in the first round after a dramatic duel with Juan Soto of the Washington Nationals. The two were tied after their regulation swings and a one-minute tiebreaker round. It was a three-stroke tiebreaker, and Soto won by hitting home runs with his three strokes.

New York Mets’ Pete Alonso ended up winning the event, just like he did in the previous Derby in 2019.
