Shohei Ohtani keeps finding ways to impress.
The Los Angeles Angels freak failed to come out of the first round of the Home Run Derby, losing a multi-round swing-off to Juan Soto, but he still received $ 150,000 for his participation. According to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register, Ohtani decided to donate the money.
Ohtani reportedly distributed checks to around 30 Angels support staff – including coaches, clubhouse workers and media relations staff – thanking them for their work on Friday.
Moreover, the 27-year-old reportedly planned to do so regardless of how the derby went, meaning he would have donated $ 1million had he won on Monday.
Ohtani had a memorable Derby again
Ohtani entered the Derby as a betting favorite, having hit 33 home runs in the first half to become the No.1 seed, but only managed 22 home runs in the first round to tie Soto. A one-minute swing-off kept the score tied at 28, leading to a three-swing tiebreaker that Soto won.
New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso ended up winning the event, beating Salvador Perez, Soto and Trey Mancini for his second straight victory.
It wasn’t the end of the All-Stars’ break for Ohtani, as he also started the All-Star Game on the mound while beating the AHL lead. Even though he only went 0-for-2 to plate while pitching a scoreless inning, he still made his presence clearly felt.
