Comedian Rob Schneider sparked controversy on social media after apparently endorsing the idea that Americans should use their Second Amendment rights to defend themselves against the country’s Covid-19 vaccination campaign.
Schneider fumed on Saturday upon learning that Pfizer wanted to introduce a new Covid-19 booster, making the full vaccination against the virus a three-dose procedure. On Twitter, the comedian urged his followers to “Just say no” to the vaccine.
“More than half of the American population continues to say no to this unapproved experimental gene therapy! “My body, my choice! “# 2ndAmendmentIsForThis,” he wrote.
In a follow-up message, he condemned the “unprecedented coercion” allegedly used to pressure Americans into getting vaccinated. Hospitals across the United States require workers to get vaccinated, and similar policies have been adopted by more than 500 colleges nationwide. While the vaccine remains voluntary for most Americans, President Joe Biden’s recent pledge to “knock on doors” of those who have not yet had the shot raised their eyebrows.
Many Twitter watchers took issue with Schneider’s provocative comment.

Other mentionned that the Covid-19 vaccines, which received emergency use authorization in the United States but are still awaiting approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), are perfectly safe and that Schneider was putting lives at risk in suggesting differently.
Some have also accused Schneider of spreading misinformation by calling the mNRA vaccines a form of “genetical therapy.” While medical experts have repeatedly pointed out that the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines have nothing to do with gene therapy, it is understandable that some are led to believe otherwise. Scientific literature on mNRA technology refers to its potential use as a vehicle for “Gene delivery”. For example, the American Society of Gene and Cell Therapy described Covid-19 mRNA vaccines as “A milestone for gene and cell therapy”.

In February, the World Health Organization city the “Genetic approach” to the development of the Covid-19 vaccine, perhaps adding to the confusion.
However, not everyone booed the comedian. Many comments thanked Schneider for speaking out, along with someone describing him as “voice of reason.”
The Twitter drama comes as countries around the world begin to scale up vaccination campaigns. Some have forced people working in certain sectors to receive the vaccine, leading to criticism that such coercive policies violate human rights.
