Shorthand San Francisco 49ers lose RB Elijah Mitchell, JaMycal Hasty and Trey Sermon to injury in win

PHILADELPHIA – The San Francisco 49ers had no plans to use newly acquired running back Trenton Cannon in any role other than special teams on Sunday. In the end, they had no choice but to plug him into the offense.

By the end of San Francisco’s 17-11 win over the Philadelphia Eagles, the Niners had lost their top three running backs to injuries within about five minutes. It came after starter Raheem Mostert was lost to a left knee injury that ended the season last week against the Detroit Lions.

First it was starter Elijah Mitchell’s right shoulder, then it was an ankle injury for JaMycal Hasty, and finally it was a concussion for rookie Trey Sermon. Mitchell left after a one-yard touchdown run was called off with 11 minutes and 4 seconds left, and Hasty and Sermon were out at 5:45.

Hasty and Sermon did not return to the game, while Mitchell returned with 5:26 to go. After the game, Niners coach Kyle Shanahan said the hope was that Mitchell’s injury was just a sting and wouldn’t be something that lasts for the long haul.

Mitchell is expected to undergo further testing when the team returns to the Bay Area.

“He said he was good enough to come back, so that’s when you think it’s a sting, but until you have time to go for an MRI and some stuff like that, you never know, ā€¯Shanahan said. “But we hope it was just a spur. You generally feel good about the way he spoke and the way he was able to get back into the game.”

The Niners finished with 117 yards on 38 carries, averaging just 3.1 yards per attempt on a day when every yard was hard to hit.

After running for 104 yards on his NFL debut last week, Mitchell started in place of Mostert but struggled to do a lot on the field as the Niners’ offense was only on on track only at the end of the first half. Mitchell finished with 17 carries for 42 yards and had two catches for 11 yards.

Hasty was the most successful among Niners runners, carrying five times for 38 yards to go with four catches for 21 yards. Sermon gained 8 yards on his transport alone, but suffered a concussion when he was shot in the shoulder and helmet to the head on the attempt.

Sermon will immediately go into concussion protocol and must clear it before he can return to the field. Shanahan was unsure of the severity of Hasty’s ankle injury after the game, and he too is ready for further testing in the Bay Area.

Between the outings of Hasty and Sermon and the return of Mitchell, Cannon carried once and lost 1 yard to end a whirlwind week in which the 49ers claimed him off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens on Wednesday.

“He’s only been here since Wednesday and we dressed him to help us on the special teams today,” said Shanahan. “And from what I saw he did a hell of a job and we weren’t expecting him to run home, but I think he did and I’m just glad he did. know what to do. “

Depending on Mitchell, Hasty and Sermon’s status in Wednesday practice, the 49ers might need to add another to the mix. Veteran full-back Kerryon Johnson could be a much-needed option after being signed to the practice squad last week.
