Should Georgian football beat Alabama for 2018 to be a success?

Is this season a success even with a defeat?

After Georgia hit Georgia Tech on Saturday, I asked a question to the DawgNation Daily's host, Brandon Adams.

"Can you call Georgia's 2018 season a success?"

The Bulldogs beat all the teams they were supposed to face in 2018. Certainly, you would like to have a better performance against LSU, but Death Valley has created a lot of good teams over the years. In all of Georgia's victories, the Bulldogs have won by at least 14 points. It took time, but quarterback Jake Fromm and Andre Swift are better players than a season ago.

Of course, the defense is not as good as it was in 2017, but it will never easily replace Roquan Smith, Lorenzo Carter and Davin Bellamy. But Georgia and Kirby Smart have seen a number of young defensemen, such as Adam Anderson, Channing Tindall and Jordan Davis, during the season.

Many things have gone well so far this season for the Bulldogs. Unlike some years of Mark Richt, Georgia has not lost any matches that it was not supposed to lose. And while some may not want to accept it, Alabama has seemed to be a top team until now this season. This is a valid reason why they are almost two favorites. A defeat against this Alabama team would be neither the end of the world nor the sign that Georgia needs change. Sometimes we get beaten.

But Georgia's players are not resting on everything they have already accomplished this season. To hear Jonathan Ledbetter, senior defensive lineman, he expects Georgia to beat Alabama on Saturday, just as the Bulldogs are expected to win every game at this point.

"I did not come back this year to not be here," Ledbetter said Monday. "It was expected of me. I worked for that. I think all members of the team worked for that. I think that anyone who has returned and did not go to the next level does not have to [go on to the next level] really expected it to be another season. We have pending business and we intend to deal with it.

In the end, for Georgia to reach its potential, it will have to defeat Alabama. It will take a national champion title to be won at some point to validate everything Smart has done. But this may not come this season and it's okay. Georgia has not yet had enough success to call an 11-1 season that seems doomed at worst to a place in the top 10 … a failure.

Georgia just can not have another season like 2017, where it has exceeded all expectations. The bar is too high, too bright now. But to get to this point, with the opportunity to win another SEC championship and return to the Play-off College Football, it has to be somehow a success for 2018.

On Monday, the two men discussed Ledbetter's comments that Georgia had pending cases this season. Johnson has a unique perspective on the issue, as his Alabama team in 2008 lost to Florida in the SEC Championship game, but Crimson Tide no longer needs to return to Florida next season . The 2009 Crimson Tide team won the national title in the third season of Nick Saban, which Kirby Smart also plans to achieve this season.

Top Dawg in the NFL

Another Georgia running back won the Top Dawg award this week as Nick Chubb won the honor of the former Bulldog who had the best week in the NFL. But before we get to the big day of Chubb, let's see how some of Georgia's ex-giants behaved this weekend:

Roquan Smith, of the Chicago Bears, had a busy day with Thanksgiving. He finished with 11 tackles and a bag, a top while the Bears stuffed the Detroit Lions 23-16. Matthew Stafford, the former world No. 1 in Georgia, completed 28 of his 36 attempts, but launched 2 interceptions without touching the touchdowns.

Linebacker Alec Ogletree of the New York Giants, who won the Top Dawg Trophy last week, finished with 4 tackles and a sack. But that was not enough as the Giants lost 25-22 to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Chubb's former teammate Sony Michel had a career day on Saturday with a career-high 133 yards and a touchdown. This is the third time this season that Michel has crossed the 100-yard mark. Thanks to Michel's strong game, the Patriots were able to recover from a loss to Tennessee and win a 27-13 win over the New York Jets.

While Michel had a good game, Chubb's day was a little better. He finished the day with just 84 yards on the ground, but he found the end zone twice. One of them was hit by an incredible 14-yard touchdown, which should raise a lot of concerns about Chubb's ability to capture off-field passes.

The Browns have now won two consecutive games and Chubb is one of the main reasons. Since the beginning of week 7, Chubb has collected 490 yards and 4 touchdowns. So, with another outstanding performance, Chubb is our Top Dawg.
