Peter King made me think.
In his last post, he proposed an absurd seven-for-one trade between the 49ers and the Houston Texans, in which the San Francisco 49ers would send Fred Warner, Mike McGlinchey, Jimmy Garoppolo, a 2021 first-round pick, a first- 2022 round pick, 2021 second round pick and 2022 third round pick in Houston for Deshaun Watson.
Why is this hypothetical trade absurd? Because the Texans would never accept it. It’s not enough. It’s basically two first-round picks and Warner, which is worth a first round, then two day 2 picks, then Garoppolo and McGlinchey.
Maybe the Texans would take Garoppolo in the deal as a short-term bridge replacement for Watson. But why would they want McGlinchey? It is not good and it is not worth much. Maybe a fifth round pick. He just doesn’t move the needle in this trade. It’s a touch. Literally the least valuable of the seven assets.
So King tried. Give it credit. He even called McGlinchey a cornerstone player, who is wealthy.
How about replacing McGlinchey in the hypothetical trade with another old first-round pick that still has value?
I’m talking about Javon Kinlaw.
Kinlaw was the 14th pick in last year’s draft. Many teams gave him first round ratings, so a lot of teams should still love him, even if he didn’t produce in his rookie season. Teams will say he was just a beginner, had no OTA or minicamp, and still has potential.
Unlike McGlinchey, a known bust.
The Texans will likely wait until after June 1 to trade Watson, so they can save $ 15 million in cap space. This means there is still a possibility that Watson will land on the 49ers. Maybe the Texans would be interested in a commercial package that includes Kinlaw – they certainly need a defensive tackle to replace JJ Watt.
Something to think about.
