Don’t worry, no spoils ahead!

The eagerly awaited The suicide squad released today in theaters and on HBO Max, and people are flocking to the movies (and their laptops) to see it.

The film features a diverse cast of characters, most of whom have never been seen in a live-action movie before, and certainly not in the film’s predecessor, Suicide Squad (2016).

So who are these characters? Let’s watch them in the comics and the new movie!

Warner Bros.

There are no spoilers ahead other than some information from the comics!

First, let’s start with our returning characters! We have Margot Robbie back as Harley Quinn. Here’s Harley in the comics, Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey, and finally, The suicide squad:

Harley’s costume got a lot closer to its comic book counterpart. In fact, Harley is wearing a leather outfit in the movie that is SUPER similar to the comic book costume pictured above, and she has a version of her red and black hair. Harley has been through a lot in the last two movies, including escaping the team, breaking up with the Joker, and beating Black Mask, but she’s back on the team now!

Viola Davis is also back as Amanda Waller, director of Suicide Squad. Here it is in the comics, Suicide Squad (2016), and the new film, The suicide squad.

If you watched the original Suicide Squad, you will recall that the pragmatic director of the Suicide Squad was kidnapped by the Enchantress after trying to use her as a member of the Squad, and the rest of the Squad were tasked with saving her.

His right-hand man, Rick Flag (played by Joel Kinnaman) is also back. Here’s Rick in the comics, Suicide Squad (2016), and The suicide squad.

Much like Harley, we see Rick in an outfit much more similar to the one he wears in the comics. In the last movie, he was in love with June Moone, whom the Enchantress possessed, and was the only non-villain member of the Squad.

And finally, to complete the returning cast, we have Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang. Here’s Captain Boomerang in the comics, Suicide Squad (2016), and The suicide squad.

Captain Boomerang was a member of the squad in Suicide Squad (2016), helping the group take down the Enchantress and listening to 10 years of her sentence. His power / skill is, you guessed it, to throw boomerangs.

Now on to our new friends! First up, let’s start with the one everyone is passionate about: Idris Elba as Bloodsport / Robert DuBois. Here’s Bloodsport in the comics and in the movie.

In the comics, Bloodsport is a Superman villain who was brainwashed by Lex Luthor. Riddled with guilt over the injuries his brother suffered in Vietnam after taking his place, Bloodsport is essentially a mercenary packing a ton of weapons that he is able to teleport in when needed.

John Cena stars as Peacemaker – here he is in the comics and the movie!

In the comics, Peacemaker was a diplomat and pacifist who turned to violence to “protect the peace.” Later versions of the character were more troubled, featuring Peacemaker haunted by his late Nazi father and believing that the dead souls of his victims were in his helmet. He’s not as bad as the others, at least in the comics, but he’s definitely violent and unstable.

Michael Rooker plays Savant – here he is in the comics and the movie.

In the comics, Savant first tried to become a vigilante like Batman before turning to a life of crime. He was sometimes the ally, sometimes the antagonist of the Birds of Prey (of which Harley is sometimes a member). He then joined the Suicide Squad – Waller asked him to help find Harley.

Hollywood legend Sylvester Stallone is also in the film, voicing King Shark. Here’s King Shark in the comics and the movie.

You may have seen King Shark on the CW show Flash or the animated show HBO Max Harley Quinn. In the comics, he started out as a Superboy villain. He also appeared in Aquaman and Suicide Squad comics and animation Batman movies and video games. He is basically what his name implies: a giant humanoid shark whose father is the god of sharks.

German actor Flula Borg plays Javelin – here he is in the comic versus film.

DC, Warner Bros. Pictures

In the comics, Javelin was a former Olympian turned Green Lantern villain, and he was tricked into joining the team by thug Rick Flag. His super power is, well … throwing javelins.

Mayling Ng plays the alien murderer Mongal. Here it is in the comics and the movie!

DC, Warner Bros.

Mongal appears in his live-action debut. In the comics, she was a Superman villain and was never actually a part of the Suicide Squad. She is super strong and also has the ability to project energy.

Taika Waititi briefly plays Ratcatcher – here he is in the comics and the movie.

DC, Warner Bros. / Courtesy of Everett Collection

In the comics, Ratcatcher was a former exterminator who turned to violence against city officials after being arrested for murder. He can control rats and often sends them out to do whatever he wants, and has been portrayed as a Batman villain.

Daniela Melchior plays Ratcatcher’s daughter, Ratcatcher 2, who was created especially for the film.

She has powers similar to her father’s – an affinity and control over rats.

David Dastmalchian plays the Polka Dot Man – here he is in the comics and the movie!

DC, Warner Bros.

Called by The suicide squad Director James Gunn “DC’s dumbest character of all time,” the Polka Dot Man is a small-scale Batman villain who was primarily used as a punching bag.

Sean Gunn did the motion capture for Weasel (pictured below in the comics and movie).

In the comics, Weasel was actually a costumed man forced to join the Suicide Squad after murdering several people. In the film, however, he is “little more than an animal” and “has no idea what is going on around him,” according to James Gunn. Sean Gunn also briefly plays Calendar Man.

Nathan Fillion plays TDK, which, like Ratcatcher 2, was created specifically for the film.

Warner Bros., Rodin Eckenroth / WireImage via Getty Images

It is, however, based on Arms Fall Off Boy, who can detach his limbs and use them as weapons.

Pete Davidson plays the last prominent member of the Suicide Squad, Blackguard.

DC, Warner Bros.

In the comics, Blackguard is a not-so-bright member of the Suicide Squad who is betrayed and killed by another member. He has armor, energy shield, and mace, and at one point runs a bar with a The Green Lantern character.

And finally, here’s the villainous Starro in both the comics and the movie!

DC, Warner Bros.

Since Starro doesn’t have a line and, I hate to tell you, isn’t actually played by a giant starfish, no actor is credited.

This should bring you up to speed! Enjoy watching a bunch of these characters die !!! *

Warner Bros.

* I don’t even count this as a spoiler. It’s called The suicide squad. People are dying.
