Absolve developer Sloclap has announced its next game, Sifu, Thursday at the State of Play event on PlayStation. Billed as “a clever, combat-oriented Kung Fu game exploring themes of revenge and redemption”, Sifu Release is slated for release this fall on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Windows PC (via Epic Games Store), Sloclap said in a press release.

The trailer for Sifu reveals the main character, a muscular kung fu student, bowing and stretching in front of an altar. After that, it then moves on to non-stop action sequences that show the martial artist fighting his way through a hallway filled with opponents.

Sifu seeks to blend challenging martial arts battles with the themes and style of classic kung fu movies in a single player game that tells a story of revenge: the student “has spent his life training for a day of reckoning after the brutal murder of his entire family by a mysterious assassination squad, ā€¯according to the press release.

Here is more of the description of Sloclap:

SifuIts unique gameplay sits at the crossroads of two established and popular genres, crushing the intensity and timeless thrill of beat em ups with the captivating design of 3D character action games. Set against the detailed backdrop of a fictional Chinese city, you’ll uncover an ancient mystery through a series of challenging showdowns that will test your skills to the limit. To overcome the obstacles that weigh heavily against you, you will have to rely on your mastery of Kung Fu and a magical pendant that will revive you after death. The cost of magic is expensive, however, and you will age considerably each time you come back to life: time is the price you will pay for your revenge.

The hand-drawn art style and combat featured in the trailer resemble the first project from the independent Parisian studio, Absolve, released in 2017. Sloclap’s first game brought a touch of martial arts to the Dark Souls formula. Sifu is one of the many games supported by the Kowloon Nights investment fund.
